What is CBD?
CBD massage therapy is a form of alternative medicine that has seen immense growth in recent years. CBD oil is the active ingredient, and it’s extracted from the cannabis Sativa plant.
This substance is unique because it contains high quantities of CBD with a small amount of THC (tetrahydrocannabinol, also present in cannabis).
CBD oil works by stimulating receptors in the endocannabinoid system (ECS), which are naturally occurring compounds present in every cell of the body.
These receptors help us to maintain homeostasis, which is a state of balance within our bodies. CB1 and CB2 are two types of cannabinoid receptors, and they can be found throughout your nervous system, digestive tract, liver cells and even your skin.
CBD oil is available in many forms, including topicals like moisturisers and balms, capsules or tinctures that you can take orally, and sprays that you spray underneath your tongue.
How does CBD work?
The endocannabinoid system (ECS) evolved in primitive animals over 600 million years ago. It promotes homeostasis and balance as changes happen to the body’s external or internal environments while controlling communication between cells. All vertebrate species, including humans, share the ECS.
The ECS regulates appetite, pain sensation, stress response, moods, and memories and acts as a bridge that connects the body with the mind through actions of our immune systems’ responses on its nerves or organs.
CBD oil taken orally has neuroprotective benefits that help prevent and reduce damage to nerve cells caused by degenerative neurological disorders such as multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease or Alzheimer’s. It is also effective at treating anxiety, depression, and chronic pain.
It can also activate serotonin receptors which have a calming effect making it an excellent treatment for PTSD and depression-related disorders.
CBD may decrease the activity of adenosine receptors in the brain, which reduces your perception of pain, inflammation levels, and any anxiety you might feel on account of pain.
CBD is an efficient anti-inflammatory and can help reduce swelling, bruising, and pain in muscles. Topically applied CBD oil has been shown to protect the skin from UV damage.
Is CBD legal in the UK?
CBD is usually sourced from C. Sativa L plants. Different species of C. Sativa L exist which differ in their makeup:
- One type of Cannabis plant includes THC at a level exceeding the legal limit in the UK and EU (between 0.2% to 30%). These are known as Type I plants.
- One of the type III plants contains a small amount of THC for legal purposes, but it is below the UK and EU limits (less than 0.2%).
In the UK and EU, CBD is sourced almost exclusively from C. Sativa L. plants because of their low THC content.
One variety of C. Sativa L has been bred to contain all the benefits of a type I plant while keeping THC levels low. These plants are known as type II plants.
What are the benefits of a CBD massage?
CBD oil is always an effective treatment for muscle pain and other physical discomforts as well. It can be taken orally or applied topically on the skin, muscles and joints to help reduce inflammation from injuries and speed healing time.
CBD massages are a new kind of therapy gaining popularity among massage therapists who specialise in alternative medicine.
This is because CBD oil helps alleviate pain through a unique method of action, which makes it an ideal natural treatment.
CBD can be delivered via topical application since it has excellent absorption and bioavailability through the skin. It does not have side effects or cause addiction like some forms of traditional pain medications does.
It’s recommended that you massage CBD daily to keep pain from flaring up at random times throughout the day.
Another popular form of delivery includes using capsules or tinctures for swallowing orally, which is also helpful if you want to avoid exposing your skin directly to the substance.
