Specialist Caesarean Scar Therapy to Support Healing, Comfort and Confidence

If you’re experiencing tightness, numbness, discomfort or concerns about your C-section scar, you’re not alone. Specialist scar massage can gently support your body’s healing - even months or years after surgery.

What is Caesarean Scar Massage?

Caesarean scar massage is a gentle, specialist treatment designed to support healing after a C-section.

Even when a scar looks healed on the surface, the deeper layers can remain tight, numb, sensitive or restricted.

Scar therapy works with the tissue beneath the skin to help improve movement, reduce discomfort, and support your body’s natural recovery.

This treatment isn’t just about the scar itself. It’s about helping you feel more comfortable in your body again.

What Can Caesarean Scar Massage Help With?

Numbness or Altered Sensation

It’s very common to experience numbness across or around a C-section scar. Some women describe it as a “dead” area. Others say it feels strange, tingly, or disconnected.

Scar therapy works gently with the tissue and surrounding nerves to help encourage healthy communication between the skin and the deeper layers. Over time, many women notice improved awareness and a softening of that numb feeling.

Tightness or Pulling Around the Scar

You might feel pulling when you stand upright, stretch, twist, or reach overhead. Sometimes it feels like something is “tethered” beneath the skin.

This happens because scar tissue can bind layers of tissue together as it heals. Gentle scar massage helps improve mobility between those layers, which can reduce that pulling sensation and restore more natural movement.

An Overhang or “Shelf” Above the Scar

This is one of the most common concerns I hear about, yet it’s rarely talked about openly.

In many cases, the appearance of an overhang is influenced by restriction underneath the scar. When the tissue below is tight, it can create a fold or shelf effect above it.

By improving tissue mobility and reducing restriction, scar therapy can help the area soften and move more freely. Every body is different, but improving the function of the tissue often improves how it looks too.

Itching or Sensitivity

Ongoing itching months or even years after surgery is surprisingly common. So is tenderness when clothing rubs against the scar.

Scar massage can help calm irritated tissue, improve circulation, and reduce hypersensitivity over time.

Discomfort During Movement or Exercise

Some women notice discomfort during core exercises, yoga, running, or even everyday tasks like getting out of bed.

If the scar is restricting deeper tissue layers, it can affect how the abdomen moves and responds to load.

By improving mobility and awareness in the area, scar therapy can help you feel more confident returning to movement.

Emotional Discomfort Connected to the Birth Experience

The abdomen holds more than muscle and skin. It holds memory.

For some women, touching the scar area can bring up unexpected emotion.

Others feel disconnected from their abdomen after surgery.

Scar therapy is not just physical. It can be a gentle way of reconnecting with your body, especially if your birth experience was difficult or unexpected.

You are always held with care, without judgement, and at a pace that feels right for you.

Every scar is different. Every body is different. And every woman’s story is different.

Your treatment is completely tailored to you - your experience, your comfort level, and your healing journey.

Why Does Scar Tissue Feel Tight or Numb?

When your body heals after surgery, it lays down collagen fibres to close and protect the wound. This is completely normal and part of the body’s natural repair process.

However, collagen is laid down quickly and not always in the same smooth pattern as your original tissue. Instead of soft, flexible layers that glide over each other, scar tissue can form in a denser, slightly tangled way.

This can cause:

  • Layers of tissue to stick together

  • Reduced movement beneath the skin

  • Tightness or pulling sensations

  • Altered sensation or numbness

During a C-section, several layers are involved - skin, fat, fascia (the connective tissue layer), and the uterus. Even though the external scar may look small, there has been significant healing happening deeper inside.

Scar massage works by gently encouraging those collagen fibres to reorganise over time. It helps the layers move more freely, supports healthy circulation, and can stimulate the nerves in the area so sensation gradually improves.

And importantly - it is never too late. Scar tissue continues to remodel and adapt for years.

What to Expect During Your Appointment

I know that coming for c-section scar therapy can feel a little vulnerable. You will always be treated with complete respect, privacy and care.

  • 1. Consultation

We begin with a thorough, gentle conversation about:

    • Your birth experience

    • How your scar feels physically

    • Any numbness, discomfort or concerns

    • Your general health and wellbeing

There is no rush. You are welcome to share as much or as little as you feel comfortable with.

  • 2. Assessment

With your consent, I will assess the scar visually and through light touch. This allows me to understand how the tissue is moving and where there may be restriction.

You are in control at all times.

  • 3. Treatment

Treatment is gentle and slow. It is not deep or aggressive.

I use specialist caesarean scar massage techniques to:

    • Encourage tissue mobility

    • Improve circulation to the area

    • Help restore sensation

    • Reduce restriction beneath the skin

Most women are surprised by how subtle it feels.

  • 4. Education & Aftercare

I will show you simple techniques you can use at home (when appropriate), so you feel confident supporting your own healing between sessions.

When Can I Start C-Section Scar Massage?

In most cases, scar massage can begin once:

  • The wound is fully closed

  • There are no signs of infection

  • Any scabbing has resolved

  • Your midwife or GP has signed you off at your postnatal check

For many women, this is around 6–8 weeks postpartum, but it can vary depending on how your body has healed.

If you’re unsure, we can always have a quick conversation before booking to make sure the timing feels appropriate for you.

It’s also important to know that it is never too late to start. I regularly see women months or even years after their C-section who still benefit from scar therapy.

Scar tissue continues to adapt over time, and gentle treatment can still make a meaningful difference.

What If My Scar Is Still Sensitive?

Early on, scars can feel tender, tight, or slightly raised. That’s completely normal.

We always begin gently. In the early stages, treatment focuses more on supporting healthy healing rather than deep mobilisation.

Your body sets the pace - not a timetable.

Supporting Your Scar at Home

Professional treatment is powerful, but what you do between sessions matters too. I’ll always guide you individually, but there are a few options that can support healing at home.

Silicone Strips (such as Scarban)

Medical-grade silicone strips, such as Scarban Silicone Strips, are often recommended for surgical scars.

Silicone works by:

  • Creating a protective barrier over the scar

  • Helping regulate moisture levels

  • Supporting flatter, softer scar formation

  • Reducing redness over time

They are usually worn for several hours a day, building up to 23 hours per day, and can be particularly helpful in the earlier months of healing.

They do not replace massage, but they can complement it beautifully.

Scar Creams and Oils

There are many creams and oils marketed for scar healing. Some can help improve hydration and comfort, but it’s important to choose products carefully.

Look for:

  • Fragrance-free options

  • Products designed specifically for post-surgical scars

  • Gentle, non-irritating formulas

Keeping the scar and surrounding skin hydrated supports elasticity, which can make massage more comfortable and effective.

That said, creams alone cannot improve deeper tissue restriction. They support the surface. Scar massage works with the layers beneath.

When Should I Wait?

You should delay scar massage if:

  • The wound is not fully healed

  • There is redness spreading beyond the scar

  • There is oozing, increased heat, or infection

  • You have been advised medically to avoid pressure in the area

If ever in doubt, I’m happy to advise before you book.

Your body has done something extraordinary. Scar therapy isn’t about rushing or forcing change. It’s about supporting your healing gently, respectfully, and at the right time.

How Many Sessions Will I Need?

This is one of the most common questions I’m asked, and the honest answer is: it depends on your body, your scar, and your goals.

Every scar heals differently. Some women have minimal restriction and notice a difference in comfort and mobility after just one or two sessions.

Others, particularly if the scar feels very tight, numb, raised, indented, or has been present for many years, may benefit from a short course of treatments.

As a gentle guide:

  • 1–2 sessions can often improve awareness, circulation and early tissue mobility

  • 3–6 sessions may be helpful where there is more restriction or long-standing tightness

  • Older scars sometimes take a little longer to respond, but they absolutely can improve

We review progress together at each appointment. I will always be honest about what I’m feeling in the tissue and what I believe would be beneficial.

There is never any pressure to commit to more sessions than you feel comfortable with.

Some women choose to come for a short course close together (every 1–2 weeks), while others prefer to space appointments further apart. We work in a way that feels manageable for you.

It’s also important to know that healing is not just physical. As the tissue softens and sensation changes, some women notice emotional shifts too. This is completely normal and part of the body integrating the experience.

My aim is not to “fix” you. Your body has already done something extraordinary. My role is simply to support it in healing as smoothly and comfortably as possible.

Why Choose Paula for Your C-Section Scar Treatment?

Choosing someone to work with your scar — and your story — is deeply personal.

I have been a qualified massage therapist since 2010, supporting women through pregnancy, postnatal recovery and wellbeing for over 15 years.

Working with women’s bodies at vulnerable and transitional stages of life has always been at the heart of my practice.

In addition to my experience, I am a fully qualified Restore Caesarean Scar Specialist, trained specifically in c-section scar tissue massage.

Scar therapy is not general massage. It requires specialist knowledge of:

  • How surgical scars heal

  • The multiple tissue layers involved in a C-section

  • Nerve sensitivity and numbness

  • Safe, gentle mobilisation techniques

This additional training allows me to work with precision and care, rather than simply “massaging over” the area.

  • A Specialist Focus on Postnatal Recovery

Because I already work extensively with pregnancy and postnatal clients.

I understand the wider picture - the abdominal wall, the connection with breathing, posture, the pelvic floor, and the emotional layer that can sit alongside a surgical birth - especially when it didn’t go to plan.

    You will never be rushed.
    You will never be dismissed.
You will never be told to “just leave it.”

  • A Safe, Private Treatment Space in Surrey

FAQs for C-Section Scar Massage

Common Myths About C-Section Scars

There is so much mixed information online about caesarean scars, and it can be confusing to know what’s true.

Here are a few myths I hear regularly in clinic:

“Once it’s healed, that’s it.”
In reality, scar tissue continues to remodel for years. Even older scars can respond positively to gentle, specialist treatment.

“If it doesn’t hurt, it’s fine.”
Pain isn’t the only indicator of restriction. Numbness, tightness, pulling or changes in sensation are all common signs that deeper layers may benefit from support.

“There’s nothing you can do about the overhang.”
While every body is different, improving tissue mobility beneath the scar can soften restriction and support more natural movement in the area.

“It’s just cosmetic.”
Scar therapy is not about vanity. Restricted scar tissue can affect comfort, posture, movement and confidence. Supporting the scar is part of supporting your whole recovery.
